Support worker Julie and one of our clients attended a BSL showing of The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks at The Lightroom, 12 Lewis Cubitt Square, London N1C 4DY, on Wednesday, 15 May 2024.
This was the third in a series of four BSL accessible showings, with the final event scheduled for Sunday, 2 June 2024. British Sign Language (BSL) was incorporated into the show, featuring BSL interpreter Ramon Woolfe and enhanced subtitles.
Martin Glover, a deaf BSL user, architect and art facilitator gave a pre-show talk at the beginning of each BSL showing.
The client was immersed in all things space and thoroughly enjoyed the show, which was made accessible with captions and a BSL interpreter projected on screens. They enjoyed it so much that they watched it twice! Open captions were built into the show and were visible at all times, located at the top of the projection on both the North and South walls. During BSL showings, enhanced captions were also in place, with captions in more prominent positions around the show space.
Tom Hanks narrated an epic experience that offered a unique new perspective on humankind’s past and future voyages to the moon. Telling the stories of the Apollo missions in intimate detail, The Moonwalkers also provided insight into the impending return of crewed surface missions by going behind the scenes of the Artemis program, including interviews between Hanks and Artemis astronauts. Lightroom’s powerful projection and audio technology transformed the immense space into a vehicle for a spectacular immersive voyage to our closest celestial neighbour.
The day concluded with some shopping in the event store, where an Apollo book was purchased, followed by enjoying the spring weather with an alfresco lunch at Gail’s Bakery.
Lightroom, London’s new home for spectacular artist-led shows, is located just an 8-minute walk from King’s Cross station. https://lightroom.uk/
